Overview of Course
Oliver was a vibrant 18-year-old autistic young man with a learning disability and epilepsy who tragically died in hospital in 2016. Despite clear warnings from him and his parents, he was given anti-psychotic medication he was intolerant to.
His family tirelessly campaigned for mandatory training to prevent future avoidable deaths. This led to the Health and Care Act 2022 and the introduction of the standardised Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training, which is now the preferred training for all CQC-registered Health and Social Care staff.
What is Oliver McGowan Training?
Oliver McGowan training is a mandatory learning program aimed at improving awareness, understanding, and care for people with learning disabilities and autism. This training equips healthcare and social care professionals with the knowledge and skills to provide safer, compassionate, and effective support.
Together we can prevent the many avoidable deaths like Oliver’s from happening again.
What Will You learn
Our versatile training courses offer the knowledge and skills needed to provide safe and effective care. You will learn to recognise and understand the specific needs of autistic people and people with a learning disability, including how to make reasonable adjustments to communication and care practices.
We offer two key tiers of Oliver McGowan training to suit different learning needs and roles. Our Tier 1 – 1-Hour webinar provides a foundational understanding for better everyday interactions, while our Tier 2 – Full-Day Face-to-Face Training develops in-depth practical skills to improve frontline service delivery, using expert insights and real-world case studies (including Oliver’s story) to build compassion and confidence in your professional role.
