Why Lived Experience Matters in Healthcare Training

Why Lived Experience Matters in Healthcare Training – CBAT

We believe that Healthcare training should be more than just following a standard curriculum. To truly make a difference, training should incorporate lived experience—the stories and insights from those who have experienced care firsthand.

By integrating these experiences into training programs, we ensure Healthcare staff and carers gain a deeper understanding of the emotional and practical significance of their roles, resulting in more compassionate, high quality and effective care.

Lived Experience is Changing Healthcare Training Courses

At the heart of our training services, we prioritise listening to the voices of those who have received care. By incorporating their stories into training, we create a more trauma-informed approach that resonates with trainees, helping them grasp the true emotional weight of their work.

Our recent feature in Healthcare Matters Magazine highlights the importance of integrating real stories into training, making it clear that lived experience is essential to building care teams that are both empathetic and effective.

One of the highlights from this feature is our BILD-ACT certified Breakaway and Physical Intervention Training, which meets the Restraint Reduction Network (RRN) Training Standards. These standards were developed in response to the tragic case of Olaseni Lewis, a young man who died as a result of excessive restraint in a mental health setting.

This tragedy underscores the need for reform in health and social care practices, and the need to provide trauma-informed care that focuses on reducing restrictive practices and enhancing care quality.

The Impact of Real-Life Experience in Care Training

Written by our Managing Director Elaine Warner, the heart of our feature is the powerful story of a woman who she had the pleasure of meeting. This lady had experienced physical restraint herself.

Her journey—from enduring trauma to finding trust in the right care environment—illustrates just how crucial it is for Healthcare providers to understand the lived experiences of those in care. Her advice to care professionals? “Talk and listen.”

This message is the cornerstone of why incorporating lived experience into Healthcare training is so vital. It encourages care teams to reflect on their work and the people they care for, transforming routine training into a meaningful learning experience.

Our Commitment to Trauma-Informed Care Training

At CBAT Education, we are dedicated to equipping Healthcare professionals with the tools, knowledge, and empathy they need to provide exceptional support while minimising the need for restrictive practices.

We are proud to be featured in Healthcare Matters, a respected publication with a readership of over 25,000 healthcare and social care professionals. This feature showcases both our community and commitment to making healthcare training more relevant and transformative for everyone involved.
